Srinagar, Aug 23 (KNO): The Khelo India Water Sports Festival—India’s first-ever national-level competition under the flagship Khelo India programme, concluded on Saturday on the calm waters of Dal Lake.
Over the past three days, from August 21 to 23 (today), the iconic lake turned into a sporting arena where “rowing, canoeing, and kayaking” were contested for medals, while water skiing, dragon boat racing and a lively shikara sprint added colour and cultural vibrancy.
As per details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), around 400–800 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories competed in the medal events, while many more participated in the demonstration showcases.
The event was organised by the Sports Authority of India and the J&K Sports Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. In the run-up to the festival, clean-up campaigns and intensified deweeding operations were carried out in Dal Lake, ensuring the environment remained clean and highlighting the eco-friendly spirit of the event.
Speaking during these days, Bilquis Mir, Olympic canoeing judge, said this is not just an event, but the beginning of a new era for water sports in our country. “This festival will serve as a major inspiration for our young athletes.”
Mohsin Ali, J&K state champion, said this festival is a dream come true for athletes like him who grew up paddling on Dal Lake.
A local shikara operator and water sports athlete said the festival will open new opportunities not only for sportspersons but also for those living around Dal Lake. “I want athletes to enjoy their visit and experience the vibrant life on Dal,” he said.
Notably, the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 marked a noteworthy step in mainstreaming aquatic athletics under the Khelo India initiative. Organisers said the event aims to position Dal Lake as a national hub for water sports, much like how Gulmarg has emerged as India’s winter sports capital—(KNO)
